Compiled by Philip Gerrard

December 2001

Some documentation has been found of a Gerrard Family in Newfoundland. It is uncertain whether or not they are related to the Nova Scotia Gerrards. The available information is in two parts; the mid-eighteenth century family of Thomas Gerrard, and the mid-nineteenth century family of Benjamin Gerrard. It is not clear if either of these two families are related to William Gerrard's family or to each other.

The earlier family (1) is that of Thomas Gerrard, born In St. John's, Newfoundland c. 1735. He apparently was married in c. 1760 to Priscilla . She was also apparently born in St. John's in c. 1739. No date of death is available for either of them. There is documentation of them having (at least) two children. Issue :

i. Jane Gerrard was born c. 1761 at St. John's, Newfoundland. She was married to Samuel ANGEL on November 16th 1787 at St. John's. Samuel was born c. 1766 at Petty Harbour, Newfoundland and was the son of John ANGEL and . Jane died in June 1857 at St. John's. Issue :

a. Elizabeth Angel, born c. 1788 at St. John's, Newfoundland.

b. Jane Angel, born c. 1790 at St. John's, Newfoundland.

c. Samuel Angel, born c. 1792 at St. John's, Newfoundland.

d. John Angel, born c. 1794 at St. John's, Newfoundland.

e. Thomas Angel, born c. 1796 at St. John's, Newfoundland.

ii. Elizabeth Gerrard was born in St. John's, Newfoundland on January 24th 1766. It is not known whether she married or not. She died in St. John's on December 8th 1849.

The later nineteenth century family is that of Benjamin Gerrard. There is no record of either his date of birth or date of marriage. He is known to have been married to Mary Anne . Benjamin died in 1868, and his name is listed in the record of burials that year, at St. Stephen's Church (2) in Greenspond, in the Bonavista Bay area of Newfoundland. This family is contemporary with William Benjamin Gerrard and Mary Prest in Nova Scotia and should not be confused with them. The family surname is spelled variously with single and double 'r's, throughout the records. Benjamin and Mary Anne had at least six children, who were all born in the Greenspond area. Issue :

i. Frances "Gerrad ' was born c. 1845. She died in 1871 and is listed in the record of burials at St. Stephen's Church in Greenspond on February 20th 1871. (3) Her daughter, Mary Anne "Gerrad " was born a year earlier on February 6th 1870, with the notation "illegitimate " in the baptismal record. (4)

ii. Fanny Gerard was born at Greenspond in 1846. She was baptized on September 23rd of that year. The baptismal record indicates that her family resided at "Fool's Island." (5)

iii. Elizabeth Gerard was born at Greenspond, and was baptized there on May 10th 1851. The baptismal record indicates that the family now resided on "Deer Island." (6)

iv. Anne Gerrard was born at Greenspond, and was baptized there on July 26th 1855. The baptismal record still lists the family as being from "Deer Island." (7)

v. Robert Gerrard was born at Greenspond, and was baptized there on April 18th 1856. The baptismal record indicates that the family is from "Greenspond." (8)

vi. Eliza Gerrard was born at Greenspond, and was baptized there on May 23rd 1863. The baptismal record indicates that the family is from "Greenspond." (9)
